I don’t know if you guys have noticed this or not, but Tilly is really, really stinking cute. This post is basically an opportunity to talk about that.
I also want to mention that, sappy as this is to say, having a dog is like having a daily reminder of the little joys in life. I have a tendency to walk fast, to talk fast, to eat fast — to rush through everything, really. But basset hounds move slowly. They dilly-dally, they take their time. I guess you could say Tilly is sort of my guru.
When Manny and I started dating, he’d had Tilly for about two years as a single puppy dad. She had come from a basset-rescue organization in Pennsylvania and had some quirks she’ll probably never really let go of — like a strong aversion to other dogs.
Tilly also has some eye probs, sadly common to bassets; she’s had to have one eye removed and needs drops daily to keep that other eyeball looking good.
But she is such an amazing little lady despite it all. I’ve mentioned routinely that she’s been super patient with this renovation madness (as is her puppy-dad). She also has a a real knack for pulling me out of myself when I need it most. I’ll be stressing over some silly detail and she’ll ‘invite’ me to take her for a walk. In the moment, I sometimes get annoyed but as soon as we step outside, I see what a blessing such distractions are.
