Manny and I are leaving for L.A. the day after Christmas and I am SO EXCITED. It’s been in the mid-40s in Savannah — what’s up with that?! — and rainy. I’m looking forward to some California sunshine.
This week, because I continue to be off of work for the holiday break with too much time on my hands, I have been thinking hard about packing. We went with one of those discount airlines that charge outrageous fees for checked bags so we need to pack light. But because it’s L.A. for crying out loud, I don’t want to get there and feel like I have nothing to wear. So I made a packing plan, and I thought I’d share it with you…
We’ll be gone for about a week, and we plan to do some hiking and biking. But in terms of sightseeing clothes, I like these basic sundresses from Madewell. They’re perfect for warm afternoons, but go well with a sweater and tights if necessary.
If you’ve seen any of my previous posts on clothes (here and here, for instance), you know I stick to a pretty basic color palette most of the time. Why not? When everything matches, it makes getting dressed a lot easier (for me anyway). I find a simple color scheme is especially helpful when traveling, though, as it minimizes the total amount I need to pack in terms of shoes and accessories.
Again: Since I’m taking clothes in the same basic color family, I can get away with just a few pairs of shoes. My plan includes a casual pair for lots of walking and a dressier pair for dinner and other fancy-pants stuff.
But why these two specifically? First: My motto is “Never leave home without a pair of Chucks” (I’m a big fan of the Shoreline slip-ons). And I never feel sloppy in my Rachel Comey Mars Mules. Emily Henderson swears by them, so I gave them a try and they really are TDF. What my Stuart Weitzman Broadband sandals are to spring/summer, these are to fall/winter. I justified the purchase by thinking in terms of cost-per-wear rather than one-season-and-done. It could be a lie I tell myself, but… I actually think I save money over time because having one pair of really good shoes will prevent me from buying half a dozen pairs of poorer-quality ones.
A black purse that’s not too small and not too big can get a girl far in life. I say: You only need one, and it doesn’t need to cost 500+ buckaroos. Save that money for shoes, ladies! #WINK
I’m not a jewelry person either. The earrings I show here (Theresa by Cassandra Goad) are the ones I wear 90% of the time. They’re white gold and blue topaz studs and they match my wedding and engagement ring — pretty much the only other jewelry you’ll see me with most days. Also, fun fact: The earrings are named after Manny’s mom!
So that’s it, more or less. There’ll be a few shorts and basic t-shirts for active stuff and a couple of odds and ends, but this should pretty much get me through.
Anyone else have fun holiday travels planned? Any personal packing strategies to share?
