I am giddy about the holidays this year. My brother and Alyssum get here tonight and we’re all hanging out at my parents’ house for the next few days to play board games and eat delicious food. Our plan is to make seafood paella for dinner on Christmas Eve (how’s that for a tradition?!) and then see what the Lutherans are up to. Christmas morning, we have mimosas and cinnamon rolls and open presents. My mom’s new kitten is probably going to go crazy in the wrapping paper. After, we’ll take a long walk and veg out until dinner with more friends and loved ones.
I. Can’t. Wait.
Here’s the thing, though. I am wildly, stupidly lucky to have my family, my job, my home — all the things that make prepping for the holidays a pleasure and not a burden or a time of sadness. I have a lot to be grateful for. We are down one very special basset this year, of course, but I am grateful for the years we got to spend with her. I am grateful for Manny. I am grateful for the bungalow. I am grateful not only for what I have but for the happiness I feel around the holidays. I am grateful to be able to give back and pay it forward in whatever small ways I can. And I am grateful for the optimism I feel about the year ahead.
Wherever you are, however you celebrate, whatever challenges or joys are before you this year, I wish you and yours a very special holiday season. May we all have a chance to eat, sleep, snuggle, play, celebrate, and rest!
